There's lots of old stuff here for sure, which is great for history buffs. For non-history buffs then yeah the city is just a beautiful place to visit but rather boring. If I didn't live here, and I wasn't a huge history buff, I'd probably visit here once and be done with it.
That was my point... I enjoyed the downtown scenery but there's only so much walking around and people watching/drinking.. etc... etc... I can do.

I'm wondering what you do in Seattle that is so much more exciting than Savannah? Just curious.

Has something occurred in Savannah that has reduced the crime rate? Relatives living there say it is a nightmare. Can see the news now, 2 ship's tourist murdered etc. What is the deal for anyone who lives there?

I don't know where your relatives live, but I have not personally experienced crime in the 3 years I have lived and worked around Savannah. Of course it exists, but if you have reasonable street smarts, it is as safe as anywhere else. Bad guys are everywhere.

Seattle is a great city IMO. Savannah is also a great city. You'd be comparing apples to oranges however. As for Kees' opinion, it's just that. I wouldn't get too offended at it.

I'm with you on this. In the 20 years of living in the Savannah area (Wilmington Island, Garden City and the Thomas Square neighborhood of downtown) I never experienced any crime or other problems either aside from a few bums asking for change. Even when I walked or rode my bicycle around downtown or on the east side at night, I never felt unsafe.

It just depends on where you're at. Every city has certain areas. Savannah is not omitted from this. There are also certain people who get scared easier than others, watch the news or go through one experience in their lives and instantly go on an endless rant about how out of control the crime problem in Savannah is.

Well while Savannah has excellent 2nd and 3rd System sea coast fortifications (not to mention Fort McAllister) your Endicott forts are in sad shape. Whereas Fort Casey by Seattle is an Endicott fort with TWO, count 'em, 10" disappearing cannon, the only ones left in The United States.

Love Savannah, but why would anyone compare a metro area of 3 million, Seattle, with Savannah's 350,000? It's not a fair comparison.

Back to Charleston: It's been a tourist haven since the 1880s, Savannah only really since the 1980s, a century's difference. To me, what Savannah has done in three decades is nothing short of amazing (almost the same name recognition as CHARL with some folks I've met). Any developments in CHARL tourism have applications to SAV. Savannah's town fathers/mothers need to look before they leap. And remember how narrow the Savannah shipping channel is. Charleston Harbor it ain't, another disadvantage. There are many.

Space Needle
Mariners games
Seahawks games
Seattle Center (and everything else there is to do downtown... too many to list)
Mt. Rainier scenic railroad
Hiking and/or camping and/or fishing at any of 1000+ trails/camping areas/rivers across the state
Mt. Rainier National Park
Mt. St. Helens National Volcanic Monument
Olympic National Park
Hoh Rainforest
North Cascades National Park
Columbia River Gorge
Snoqualmie Falls
Leavenworth
Stevens Pass ski resort (also White Pass... Snoqualmie Pass... Crystal Mountain...)
Snoqualmie/Emerald Queen/Muckleshoot Casinos (slots, blackjack, craps, poker, etc)

There's more but that's what came to mind off the top of my head. I don't know of many cities in the US where you are within a couple hours drive of the ocean, mountain snow skiing pretty much year round, all the hiking, camping and fishing you could ever want, 5 active volcanoes and a rainforest... but all this and more is within a short distance of Seattle.

The summers are mild with temps in the 70's which make outdoor activities that much better. Winters are also mild with temps in the 40's and 50's... it is gray a lot but contrary to popular belief it doesn't "rain all the time" during the winter months... and the sunny summers make up for the gray winters.

If you like the outdoors you'd like it here...

Indeed... apples to oranges. Not trying to offend anyone. I loved the look of downtown Savannah.

I fail top see why any cruise but a casino river or just off shore would be a big deal there. meals are paid for , Savannah is a cool city but can be seen in about 6 hours give or take ad then what? no a riverboat gambling thing would work, and you better get it done before SC does it .
