OK, so here is the situation, and I would VERY much appreciate any advice on this. I live in Bryan County, GA, and have for a long time. I went through a divorce and needed a car, but the interest rate was going to be pretty ugly, due to the divorce and my time spent out of the workforce, so my dad (he lives out of state) financed it, and I am making the payment. How can I get a GA tag on the car? I have insured it. I have a GA license, and am a resident. My dad lives is MI, and is the one on the loan. The MI Secretary of State and my insurance company both say it has to be tagged here, yet when I go to my tag office, they look at me with the 'deer in headlights' look and say that it has to have a MI tag.
Any advice? My temporary tag is running out of days and I really need to figure this out.
Thank you so much!

If your father financed it, his name is probably on the Title as the owner until it's paid for. Then he would sign it over to you. The tag and any taxes would then be his responsibity in MI.

However, if YOUR name is on the title, the tag and taxes should be your responsilbity. Do you have the Title? What does it say? If his name is still on it, get him to transfer ownership to you then the owner(you) lives in Georgia.

(this is what my husband says, but the laws may have changed since he was dealing with cars, etc)

Your father must register it in MI. Some states require that the vehicle be physically present when it is being registered, others do not. I would have your father complete the registration in his home state and merely send you the tag. I see SO MANY vehicles driving around Savannah without a tag, or with an expired temp tag, I don't want to say not to worry, but as long as you stay out of trouble, you should be ok until the metal plate arrives from MI.

Yes and no. I thought the same thing but after a couple of years, and the local police got to recognize my crappy looking truck they stopped it one day. An employee was driving it smoking, gabbing on the phone etc and was asked "who's truck is it?" After a bad story line the cop said if I stop this truck again I'm going to arrest you because this truck is always here and you don't have GA tags.

"Sold" the truck to a friend and had tags and insurance the next day. The difference is: I owned the truck outright so it wasn't a problem to "sell" it. You don't have title. I know what I would do.....BUT I'm not going to suggest it.
