Well, unfortunately (or fortunately) ... the buffet at Ole Times is just $8.99! Considering what you get, it's the best dining deal in town!

Is it a "dining deal" or a "eating deal"? These are two very different deals in my mind.

Hmmm ... "Eatin'" is correct I suppose.

Call me snobby, but going to an $8.99 buffet is the same as going on a $299. Carnival Cruise. Can't. Won't.

The thing is...when I get a "plate" of take out from let's say a soul food place , a main plus two sides, and a pc of cornbread for 7 bux, that all I can eat anyway. So to go to an all you can eat fest doesn't do anything for me.

Kinda like Thanksgiving when I sample all that's on the table and then spending the rest of the day thinking about why did I do that and now feel so ill.

I usually skip the cornbread and go for the fried okra, blackeyed peas, and greens. Almost no one makes good cornbread.

Avoiding a REALLY good buffet restaurant (clean, good food, great value) because it's not expensive enough?! Yes -- you're snobby!

I try to avoid buffets personally because I eat too much and then feel bad, but back to the original post....the Ole Times Buffets here in Middle GA have almost a cult following and they are always packed...ALWAYS. They must be doing something right.

Also, I believe the same company owns Smok-n-Pig barbecue in Macon and Valdosta and they are packed nearly all the time as well.

We had never been to any of their locations in any city, but did try the one here just two weeks ago (right after they opened). The trough-like atmosphere really isn't our thing, but the glowing recommendation Newsboy presented was alluring enough to give it a try. It was relatively clean (although it is brand new), and the food was copious and apparently refreshed often. They fry about half their food, so if you aren't into the fried thing, you're already at a major disadvantage. Fried pork ribs? Never seen those before. And frankly - not good.

I love Ole Times! I'm a chunky trough girl and yes, their food is unbelievably authentic southern cooking. they have hoe cakes too, which you hardly ever find, and their cornbread is moist and delicious. And yes, fried pork ribs! Gaah! The first time I tried one I moaned out loud. Chopped hamburger steak and gravy over rice, stewed tomatoes with okra, squash, greens, cabbage, rutabaga (yes, where else can you find that), mashed potatoes, corn on the cob, creamed corn, broiled fish (I just went Friday night for seafood), the fried shrimp is very fresh, cajun boiled shrimp, fried clams, fried catfish, I can't remember everything. It's only one double-line of steamed pans, so it doesn't have the selections that Golden Corral does, but the food is so much better you don't really care. I will say I love mac & cheese, but I am not fond of theirs. The noodles are still al dente, and the cheese doesn't stick to them right, instead of being soft and covered with cheese, the noodles are separated and sticky with cheese. Just my opinion. But well worth a visit. And kids eat free (under a certain age).
