We are moving to either Beufort SC or Chatham Cnty GA near Savannah. Can anybody tell me which state and area is better for help? Which gives more social sec income? Which has better special schools and what are they? I can't find any charters or special needs schools in either place. Which helps parents more and has better transitional/vocational/housing care? My son is 15 and needs help. I'm in Fl and getting nowhere. My husband may be getting a job in this area. Thanks.

You would get more help if you did a better job explaining what you need. I had to look up PDD.

Turns out I know someone with autism who will be going to a special school this year to help him manage his disability. Unfortunately, I can't remember its name.

Good news is that you can get the help you need. Here's a link:

Try calling the board of education and ask someone to help you.

Or try this person:

Mikki Garcia, Ed.D, Executive Director
K-8, Middle Schools & Exceptional Children
208 Bull Street

Savannah, Georgia 31401
Office: (912) 395-5877
Fax: (912) 201-7692

As far as receiving income or aid from the State, I think you would have to live here a certain number of months to establish residence.

for somethings, that could be as long as two years.

People who are not in the "system" don't know much about aid programs or SSI or anything youre dealing with. It's a different world.

Maybe someone here has some experience, but until you call the Social Security office in both cities and ask them these questions you will not get the right answers. Be sure to take notes about what they say.

Since SSI is a Federal program, I'm not sure how much an individual state will affect your basic benefit.

Try to meet with your caseworkers in person and keep a list of your questions and concerns.
