Certainly a big win for Savannah, 75 new high paying jobs is a pretty good catch considering the economy.

Still doesn't make up for the 350+ workers who were laid off around Christmas, 2008. GDT is not a Savannah-spirited employer.

I bet SEDA must have practically given them the land after letting Savannah lose GD's new manufacturing plant to Statesboro.

Couldn't afford to screw up twice.

^ and I'm sure GDT still pockets a BIG payday by selling the Lathrop facility to the port, the whole underlying reason for the move in the first place.

They could have found a sweet land deal in any number of locations across the country, where they have other manufacturing facilities. The ~350 jobs lost here when they closed the plant in Savannah was because the plant was just too antiquated to keep retrofitting, particularly when the value of the land far outweighed its use as a truck trailer manufacturing facility. In any case, they needed more land to build the modern refrigerated plant they wanted, and nowhere in Savannah offered the right combination of land and cost. I don't think you can blame them for building in Bulloch County instead. In the end, this brand new facility just announced keeps their company HQ in the Savannah area, and honors their long history of being a Savannah company. They could have simply packed up and left altogether, especially since the corporate ownership is actually based in Chicago.

Word is (was) the ownership team actually tried to move all operations to Indiana. The managing family, the Pines, does not like Savannah one bit & would love to have nothing to do with the area.

When Pines and Great Dane Trailers were merged into the Great Dane Limited Partnership by the Crown family under agreement with Phill Pines, there was talk of moving the HQ. But, that was quite a few years ago now, and I think with this announcement, the issue is clearly settled. Great Dane is staying right here.

... amen to that. I was one of the 350.

Still... I can thank Great Dane for allowing me to get my foot in the door in manufacturing. It allowed me to get a much better (and much higher paying) job in Seattle with one of Boeing's many vendors.
