My friend's birthday in on St. Patty's day and as far as she knows were just going down to Savannah for the celebrations. However, I was thinking of calling up a local bakery and placing an order for a small birthday cake as a surprise. Since it's only going to be 6 people, a small cake is all we need. Can anyone suggest a nice bakery that have great quality and decent pricing?

What I'm looking for:

Option one: Tres leches cakes is my top choice however they're hard to come by as no one but Mexican bakeries in the US make them.

Option two: Red velvet cake. Probably an easy one to acquire in Savannah.

Option three: Cupcakes. Easy, cheap, and appropriate for such a small party.

Option four: Traditional white cake.

We're driving 4.5 hours so making it at home and having it survive the trip and still be a surprise is a no go. I appreciate any help. Thanks!

Whatever you decide, you had better order yesterday if you want a shot at anything being baked custom for you in Savannah on that day!

There are a few options I'd point you to, and you can make the calls to see if you're in luck.
Baker's Pride (a long time Savannah favorite)
Back in the Day Bakery (a hipster's kind of bakery - trendy and good)
Rum Runners Bakery (a downtown option)

There are quite a few cupcake specialty places, if you like paying A LOT of money for cupcakes.

If you run out of luck with the family owned places, there's always Publix. They have a pretty good bakery, actually. May you have the luck of the Irish in getting a cake on St. Patty's Day in Savannah...

1. Back in the Day -- they were just featured prominently in Southern Living
2. Publix -- their bakery cakes are really good

If you're going to the downtown area they make custom cakes at Kroger on the corner of Habersham. I see ppl picking them up all the time and I don't suppose they are expensive.

Tres leches would be available in Georgetown but that's just not doable for you.

There's also a good Mexican Bakery on Montgomery Crossroads.

For a cake, I'd go to Back in the Day. They do all the southern favorites (the ones I can't get where I live), and do them well. A little pricey though.

For any kind of donut, it's Baker's Pride, hands down. Am I imagining it, or was Krispy Kreme much better years ago? KK donuts seem kind of sweet and bland to me now. Did they change, or did I? Baker's Pride has much better ones.

@Ellie: Baker's Pride is a first stop when I visit Savannah. Along with a fried seafood platter (or two), barbecue, and southern country breakfasts, there will be donuts from Baker's Pride.

I wonder if they would serve that with a side plate of Lipitor? Like, maybe, a half dozen 40mg pills for after dinner with my Bailey's Crème.
