To really appreciate what River Street (and Savannah) are today, you need to see what it looked like in the 1970s -- before and during the MASSIVE construction project that created Rousakis Plaza and the River Walk.

The VERY LARGE photo galley linked below from the SMN is fascinating. I was able to view it despite not having paid access. If you run into a block, try viewing it through Google Chrome's Incognito feature. That works 95 percent of the time.
