GoCompare used data from the Internet Movie Database (iMDB) to discover what the most-filmed locations around the world are. Within the data compiled on the United States, the site found that Savannah is the second most-filmed city in the state of Georgia — just behind Atlanta — with Georgia being the seventh most-filmed state in the country. Other Georgia cities on the list, included: Augusta, Marietta, Athens, Decatur, Macon, Covington, Rome, Columbus, Alpharetta and Newnan.

The films most associated with Savannah, included: “Forrest Gump,” “The Longest Yard” and “The Conspirator.”

Somebody tell them Savannah, Asheville, and Virginia Beach really don't belong on that list, which is a pretty weird mashup of cities.

The "Cool Cities" authors are bone-heads. Even the leading British travel guides have featured Savannah prominently for the last 10 years (often with as many text lines as they devote to Atlanta). The U.S. travel guides publish separate Savannah, Savannah-Hilton Head, and Charleston-Savannah titles -- as well as a Savannah section in their national, Southern U.S., and Coastal South books.

The NYT seems to write a love letter to Savannah about every week.

You are so right. The Times was among the first big love-letter-writers (around 1978) -- outside of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution of course. As Newsboy once commented, the NY Times must love Savannah. And they really do.

I once searched the NYT archives for Savannah references. Hundreds of articles came up. That’s one of the reasons I started this thread!

Top 5 Reasons for Savannah's current success:

5. "The Book" - One of the biggest literary successes of the 1990's, Midnight In The Garden Of Good And Evil drew unprecedented interest in all things Savannah. Thank you, John Berendt.

4. Historic Savannah Foundation - Its creation dovetailed with a surge in interest in historic preservation in the country at large. Spearheading the charge was the Rockefeller family, who singlehandedly saved Williamsburg and countless other historical sites beginning in the 1930's; their philanthropy galvanized preservation efforts in Charleston, New Orleans and Savannah.

3. SCAD - Whereas the movement to save historic residential properties was well underway prior to SCAD's arrival, it was they that got the ball rolling on rehab and reuse of Savannah's commercial building stock.

2. Paula Deen - Clearly she was instrumental in making Savannah a household name and helping to craft the romantic image that it enjoys today.

1. NYT being one of its biggest cheerleaders for decades now.

None of these factors add up to what Savannah has done on its own merits.
