Savannah was once described by a travel writer as “the intersection of gentility and avant garde, with back alleys of the just plain weird.”

Great Georgia Trend article. I remember that one of my mother's husbands (long story) took Ga. Trend magazine in the 1980s, and I always read the copies. Back then, Ga. Trend considered Savannah to be the state's lazy backwater city in decline. All the other 2nd-tier cities were booming then, and the magazine groaned that Savannah would never join the cool kids. But everyone knows it's cool now. Its population growth is at the top of Georgia's MSAs, and it has booming urban corridors to the west of the south, and some growing industries. Good news.

I have been to Savannah a few times. My family is in Charleston, SC. It is a short hop to Savannah. It is by far one the coolest cities in the dang country. There is a saying that goes, "In New Orleans they will ask you who your daddy's people are, in Charleston they will ask you who your momma's people are, and in Savannah they will ask you what you want to drink". It is getting time to start considering where to land in retirement. The Savannah area is tops on my list. If I can get the wife over her hate of humidity and big bugs, Savannah is where we would go.

A solo female travel blogger waxes about her visit to Savannah:

"Most destinations give me a chance to fall in love with them on my own terms. Savannah did not do that. Savannah insisted, demanded, and eventually took me by the hand and intoxicated me by force."

A blogger from Seattle posts some nice photos and comments about her short visit to Savannah:

It was the textures and shadows which struck me – and made me realise how much I crave, and can’t get, old stuff here in Seattle, where not much goes back more than a hundred years. In Savannah, even the bricks and paving stones have antique stories to tell, history seeps out of the very fabric of the city, and it all made me dreadfully nostalgic for England.
