Basically, Kroger has entered the supercenter format. I understand marketplace stores carry clothing, shoes, jewelry, and housewares. I think it's an interesting concept for Kroger, but nonetheless meant to compete more head on with Wal-Mart.

On another note, I'm a little sad to see the vintage Kroger "Sav-on" store demolished. It marked the Atlanta division of Kroger's furthest south store when it opened in 1976. Of course, Kroger would open another "sav-on" that still exists on Victory Drive in 1980, and then in 1985 they acquired the 15 store M&M chain.

But, oh well, we'll get a Dick's S.G. out of the demolition. Savannah is about 15 years late on that one.

I love Kroger's leftover popcorn chicken and buffalo chicken... so cheap and yummy. Their store-brand kettle chips are good too. Ahh... I miss having access to a Kroger.

I don't know if you mean they will be like a Target or Walmart (I hope not), but the one in Richmond Hill has a very nice Gift/Housewares section that I like a lot, so I hope it's like that.

I like Kroger Marketplace format...I wouldn't exactly compare it to Walmart as it's still more of a grocery store. I think eventually all Krogers will upgrade to this format.

I've read about Kroger doing this but have yet to visit one. From the article the departments listed below are the only ones that are not in the typical Kroger (although a fuel center has become pretty common at Krogers).

* Fred Meyers Jewelry
* Fuel Center
* Starbucks
* Baby World
* Murray’s Cheese

The article said the new store would sell clothes. I've never seen that.

Kroger Marketplace® is a one-stop destination for home fashion and décor, bed and bath, kitchen and small appliances, home office and toys – in addition to traditional fresh food and groceries. The store will also include an apparel department, offering name brand products like Levi’s, Sketchers and more.

A couple of the ones here sell clothes although the selection isn't that big. The one they're building there may have a bigger selection since it will be bigger. (The largest marketplace in Augusta is only 83,500 sq ft.)
