It's about time this project starts. GDOT might as well make SR 204 a freeway all the way to 95.

Well, it basically is (or rather will be), except for one lone traffic light that gets very little cross-traffic.

There is the Gateway traffic light. Basically at 95.

That interchange is one in need of reconstruction.

Yeah, but I don't count that one because it's right there at I-95. I see your point though. At least the road is built to freeway standards most of the way. It could be worse.

BTW ... does anybody but old timers still use the terms "Abercorn Expressway" or "Abercorn Extension?" And what did that apply to, anyway? I never knew. I thought at one time the entire street south of Derenne was called "extension"' but the city dropped it a few years ago and just started calling the whole thing "street."

Anybody know?

I don't know for sure, but I always believed what you said--that everything south of DeRenne was "Abercorn Extension". I think "Abercorn Expressway" is just a term among locals and not some kind of official name, unless they were trying to be ironic--ain't nuthin' "express" about the trip down Abercorn. With the standardization of street names and designations that came with 911 and GPS, "Extension" was probably not a term for a roadway that the systems would recognize, so they just continued numbering businesses with Abercorn's numbers and make the whole thing one street. They could have pulled a Bull/White Bluff thing, giving "Abercorn south of DeRenne" a new name, but people had already gotten used to Abercorn, I would think.

When I lived on that side of town, I used to refer to Abercorn past the Savannah Mall as "Highway 204," even though it was technically still Abercorn, so perhaps we just want to break it up in our heads because it's so darn long!

I always just referred to it as simply "Abercorn" except for points beyond Savannah Mall. In that case, it's 204.

I'm sure all locals know this, but past 95 and west, it is Fort Argyle Road. I still just call it 204.

You guys are messing with my learning curve. lol. Four plus years ago, when I got here ,the first thing I was taught was: Lowes is on the Abercorn extension. This is what I've been working with all that time.

Now y'all tell me I'm on another road. How am I to learn how to get around??

People still call it that--I mean, old habits die hard--but I don't think it appears on street signs or anything. It'll just say "Abercorn".

Some day, we'll have to sit you down and explain the whole Liberty/Wheaton/Skidaway thing. Be prepared.

Well, the "official" address of Savannah Mall is 14045 Abercorn Street.

So that settles that.
