I wonder would it be feasible to do a deal similar to the proposed 800-room convention hotel for the GWCC.

1. Savannah is a MAJOR preferred destination for convention planners.
2. Savannah does not have the mass of large-block downtown convention hotel rooms to make large-scale (3,000+) meetings possible.

This seems like a no-brainer: BUILD IT AND THEY WILL COME! Should the county subsidize another 500-room convention hotel? I dunno. I don't think it would be that great a risk. But on the other hand, I also believe that if the market would support that type of enterprise, a private investor would have stepped forward by now.

Questions, questions ...

I think the latter is what the majority of citizens are concerned about. So many conservatives throughout the area refuse to have their tax money spent on something that could be considered something the private sector should be doing.

I do understand their logic, however, the Westin is a good example of a risk taken that ended up on a positive note. Especially for Hutchinson Island itself.

Personally, I feel that Savannah needs this type of venue for the convention industry, but the real question is why hasn't any private investor stepped up to the plate here?

You raise a good point : nobody gave the Westin a chance in hell. And it's been wildly successful. However, the Westin is a RESORT hotel -- not a convention hotel. The difference here is, no *convention* hotel has taken the risk to prove itself on the north side of the River. And that's just crazy. A convention centre as large and successful and successful as the SMT&CV ought to have a large convention-specific hotel attached.
