I liked the mayor's statement -- a lot. If you read between the lines, what she's really saying is "We fired this guy and are trying to clean up the mess he made." Considering the way Savannah's black establishment usually sticks together like glue no matter how damning the evidence, that's huge.

Yes, interesting. But, they let him retire and collect retirement. I say cancel his retirement $. He won't need it in jail anyway.

People don't get to his stature without collecting collateral and dirt. Going to be interesting to see both put into play on this.

Yes, if it were just local stuff (or even state-level crimes), it would likely be shoved under the nearest rug, since he'd have dirt on people who would have a vested interest in him not putting things on public record. They would be as motivated as he is to plea him out and send him off into quiet (silent) retirement. But federal charges might be more troublesome, since the feds usually don't care about local yokels keeping their dirty laundry secret; they do care about career advancement via huge "bring-downs" that could make state-wide headlines.

Sentenced to 7.5 years in prison.

"Lovett, offered a chance to make a final statement, replied simply, “No, your honor,” and then remained silent."

Interesting side story: I was downtown when this verdict came down, and just happened to be walking through Wright Square as all the TV cameras were gathered around the principles came marching out of the courthouse to face the media. I stood off to the side watching, along with several dozen tourists who didn't have a clue what was going on but were mesmerized all the same, holding up their cell phones and clicking away at photos.

"What's going on?"
"Who is it?"
"Is it a scandal?"
"Is it some big horrible crime?"
"Is it somebody famous?"
"Is it Paula Deen?"

I chuckled at the realization that Savannah's reputation is such, that tourists actually come here LOOKING for scandal ... ney, EXPECT it ... and no doubt, go home a little disappointed when they don't encounter any. Happy to say, we provided this weekend's visitors with a little, even if it didn't involve Ms. Deen.
