Located across from the newly built Sustainable Fellwood mixed-income development, the structure needed to come down to make way for the neighborhood’s revitalization, said Ronald Williams, president of the West Savannah Neighborhood Association.

“I’m hoping this is just the first of many,” Williams said. “They’re eyesores just like a cancer.”

The building was included on the “100 worst” properties list the city unveiled last August as part of an anti-blight initiative.

Comprised of nominations made by the general public and locations identified by city staff, the list targets Savannah’s most neglected properties.

Since the list was unveiled, at least 23 targeted properties have been brought into compliance either by being maintained, demolished, secured or rehabilitated, according to the city’s latest count in February.

The “rehabilitated” status does not mean the properties have been converted into picturesque homes, however. At least three of the five properties with the designation had boarded up windows and doors Tuesday.
