Publix entered Savannah in 1991, but has definitely been expanding in the area since 2007. In early 2007, there were three Publix stores in Savannah MSA. By the end of 2017, with the addition of the second Pooler Publix, there will be nine stores.

Kroger, by comparison has eight stores in the Savannah MSA. Once upon a time they had more stores. However, they've closed many of the older, smaller stores (former M&M's mostly) and have been updating the remaining stores.
Chatham County (6 stores)
Bryan County (1 store)
Effingham County (1 store)

By my count this will be the 8th Chatham County Publix and 9th in the 3-County MSA?

CHATHAM COUNTY
-- 12 Oaks
-- Largo
-- Wilmington Island
-- Whitemash Island
-- Skidaway Island
-- Port Wentworth
-- Pooler
-- Savannah Quarters

BRYAN COUNTY
-- Richmond Hill

(For all intents and purposes, the Port Wentworth store is basically an Effingham County store because it's only a mile from the county line. I guess they figured Rincon residents would be more likely to stop and shop on their daily commutes than Chatham residents would driving north into Effingham just to visit a Publix there.)

There are several more in Beaufort County of course, and one each in Glynn (Brunswick) and Camden (Kingsland). Why they pulled out of Statesboro remains a mystery.

JUST FYI -- To illustrate how Publix only "goes where the money is" (in Georgia at least), in my home County of Fayette (Peachtree City, Fayetteville) there are five (5) Publix stores serving a population of less than 120,000. Right next door in Clayton County, there's just ONE Publix store remaining (all the others have been closed) serving a population of 270,000 (fewer than Charham). Of course, Fayette is the 2nd wealthiest county in the state (after Forsyth) while Clayton is the poorest county in the entire Atlanta MSA.

Also, there's a Publix literally in the middle of rural Putnam or Greene counties (I forget which) that was built to serve the wealthy neighborhoods and resorts at Reynolds Plantation on Lake Oconee. And they have begun expanding into the far reaches of North Georgia to serve the many wealthy city folks who have second homes up in the mountains.

MAKE NO MISTAKE: Publix has never pretended to be an "every man's" grocey store, at least not in Georgia. Their niche is definitely "up market" and their choice of locations proves it.

Publix does not cater specifically to customers with high income. I have been to a Publix in a trade area split between high income and government assisted customers. The store performs well and is constantly busy.

Because Publix is the predominant grocer throughout Floridia, I have no doubt that they have many stores in marginal neighborhoods down there. But that is clearly NOT the case anywhere in Georgia.

If there is not a Publix nearby, Food City, Ingle's, Kroger, Walmart Neighborhood Market and Walmart Supercenter are alternatives.

It seems the work on the new Publix has jump started some other activity down there. The land on the other side of the BP is being cleared and the large vacant area across the street is longer showing as for sale and a bunch of clearing is going on. Anyone heard anything about what is happening with these two?

It just started this week. The large piece and a smaller one where the theater were supposed to go had been listed for sale as a whole and as separates. The 150 acre site is no longer listed. Also being marketed is the westside medical campus at Savannah Quarters at Quacco and Easthaven.

I had lunch with 2 SQ residents last week, and they don't know what is going next to BP either. The Publix is going on the other lot on Pooler Pkwy.
