Because if they didn’t you’d say “I wonder why the GPA hasn’t released any statistics on port traffic lately?” and assume the worst ... that it’s declinihg rather than growing.

All of this record growth and now an article where Savannah can't afford to keep the fireboat in service to protect the ports?

The facility is expected to employ 20 to 25 workers for now, working in operations and the warehouse. That number doesn’t include truck drivers.

“This new facility is in a very strategic spot and will give us access to this key port city,” Keuten said. “We will have complete coverage in Georgia, 24/7 live dispatch and dedicated account management. This is a true win/win across the board.”

Keuten said the efficiency of the Savannah port is “better than any in the United States.”

“In Long Beach, Calif., we can only do 1.3 truck turns a day,” Keuten said. “Here we can do eight.”

For calendar year 2018 through November, the Port of Savannah handled 4 million twenty-foot equivalent container units (TEUs), up from 3.72 million for the first 11 months of last year. Containers currently booked for December will add about 362,000 TEUs to the annual total, enough to set a new record.

"Cargo expansion related to growth in inland markets, as well as increased demand right here in the U.S. Southeast, have shifted the global logistics arena in Savannah's favor," authority Executive Director Griff Lynch said Monday. "More port users [are] choosing to serve their customers via Georgia's deep-water terminals."

The Port of Savannah handled a record annual volume in calendar year 2018, Georgia Ports Authority Executive Director Griff Lynch said at Tuesday’s regular meeting of the GPA board.

The port moved 4.35 million 20-foot equivalent units, or TEUs, in 2018, a 7.5 percent increase over the same period in 2017.

“The level of business Georgia has captured is a testament to the world-class service provided by our stevedores, ILA, pilots, other port stakeholders, and our partners at Coast Guard and Customs and Border Protection,” said Lynch. “Georgia’s unrivaled connectivity to Atlanta, Memphis, Charlotte and beyond allows port customers to reach new and growing markets.”

Americold Realty Trust, the world’s largest owner and operator of temperature-controlled facilities and infrastructure, has acquired PortFresh Holdings, LLC, at 2001 Old River Rd., in Bloomingdale, the company announced this week.

In connection with the acquisition, Americold plans to build a new 1.5 million cubic foot state-of-the-art cold storage facility on adjacent land owned by PortFresh. The total cost of the acquisition, including approximately 163 acres of contiguous land, is approximately $35 million.

The cost of the planned new build is expected to be between $55 to $65 million.

“The Port of Savannah is one of the fastest growing ports in the United States and has seen increased traffic of temperature-controlled trade. With this investment, Americold is fulfilling our customers’ requests to expand into this growing market, which provides an efficient and cost-effective solution to meet their import and export needs,” said Fred Boehler, President and CEO of Americold Realty Trust.

More than 400,000 square-feet of industrial space is on tap for 1315 Dean Forest Road as part of a joint venture between North Signal Capital LLC and Westport Capital Partners LLC.

The firms broke ground this week on two of the last developable sites within 10 miles of the Savannah port, which is slated to become Dean Forest Commerce.

“The sites are just seven miles from the Georgia Ports Authority, home of the fourth largest and fastest growing port in the nation. The opportunity to deliver highly attractive total occupancy costs to tenants in a market with sub 1 percent industrial vacancy rate drove our investment,” said Peter Goulding, Partner, North Signal Capital LLC.

The Joint Venture completed its acquisition of the land on Oct. 31, and plan to develop two industrial buildings, 355,000 square-feet, and 88,000 square-feet, respectively.

The Port of Savannah will soon be able to unload six 14,000 TEU vessels at the same time. A TEU is a measurement unit equivalent to a 20-foot container.

Georgia Ports Authority Executive Director Griff Lynch told attendees at the Georgia Foreign Trade Conference Tuesday morning that the Big Berth/Big Ship program will be completed in 2024.

The annual two-day meeting is attended by logistics professionals and was held on Sea Island at the Cloister Hotel.

“No other single container terminal in North America has the ability to expand berth capacity at this rate,” said Lynch. Currently, Savannah’s Garden City Terminal is equipped to handle two of these vessels and by April of this year that number will increase to three.”

More warehouses for Port Wentworth...
Quote:
Port Wentworth Council members approved site plans for a new warehouse at their regular meeting on Thursday night.

Plans call for construction of a 351,000-square-foot warehouse and a 200,000-square-foot warehouse by developer Northpoint Industrial, LLC. The warehouses will be located on Pinder Point Road, off of Ga. 21.

Adjacent property owners -- with one exception -- voiced approval for the plans.

A long-time resident of Pinder Point Road, Andrea Anderson said she wanted to sell her property for the development.

“I want to sell very badly,” Anderson said. “It will only sell to warehouse people.”

Trump is proposing $130 million in funding in next year's budget for port expansion.

Quote:
The Trump administration on Tuesday proposed setting aside $130.3 million for the Savannah Harbor Expansion Project in the fiscal year that begins Oct. 1. That’s just shy of the amount boosters have been pushing for in recent meetings with the administration.“Funding at this level, which represents full capability for the coming year, ensures that the project remains on schedule and that the United States will soon benefit from the substantial return on investment that the Savannah Harbor Expansion Project represents,” said Jimmy Allgood, the board chairman of the Georgia Ports Authority.
