Two days into the new year and there have been no shootings or homicides so far. How many days can we go before violent crime rears its ugly head in our fair city again? Let's use this thread to keep a running tally on the murder rate this year. I know it's not a pleasant topic, nor one the Chamber of Commerce and Visit Savannah would like to see. But it's important, and I believe the best way to address our crime problem is to be honest and talk about it.

The Savannah-Chatham Metro Police Department covers a jurisdiction with a population of about 250,000 people. During 2015 they investigated 53 homicides. In 2016 they investigated 51. Considering that in April of this year we were already at DOUBLE the number of homicides compared to April 2015, the fact that things really slowed over summer and fall is one small victory worth celebrating.

Here's praying and hoping that we see far fewer in 2017.

In case you're wondering ... Savannah's murder rate is about 20 per 100,000. Chicago's in 2016 was 28 per 100,000. And they had something like 7,000 shootings, which is just shocking. As bad as things may sometimes seem to us here in Savannah, we are far from being the violent crime capital of America (like we were in 1991). New Orleans, St Louis, Memphis and Baltimore all have violent crime rates worse than Chicago.

We have our first homicide of the year: A fatal stabbing at the Truman Parkway homeless camp. As I type this, police are still searching for a suspect.
