That will be an amazing project that will forever change Savannah. Hopefully it will build out like the plan. I wonder if it includes any police or fire facilities since there is nothing there now.

Looks like some of those SRL buildings will be 10-12 floors high. I sure hope so. Wouldn't mind seeing something even taller there but I know it's not gonna happen. Didn't the earlier announcement for SRL mention a grocery store?

Agreed. When was the last time a building was built with a double-digit floor count? Was it the Westin?

The old Romana Riley School is being converted to senior housing...
Quote:
Behind the building, workers were setting up a temporary power pole to provide electricity for the project that includes the construction of 30 apartments in the existing buildings on the site and 27 additional apartments in a new building being constructed on a vacant lot along E. Henry Street, where the school’s cafeteria once stood.
Before beginning construction of what is expected to be a year-long project, workers will have to perform remediation work to clear environmental hazards such as lead and asbestos, said Bill Gross, whose Kingsland-based company, W.H. Gross Construction, is behind the effort. The buildings are structurally sound, but the investment is going to amount to about $7 million and would not be possible without federal and state tax credits he was awarded for the restoration of the historic building, Gross said.
Being affordable goes beyond the rent. In addition to preserving the Gothic Revival building’s historic features, the structure will be renovated to meet EarthCraft standards that will make it energy efficient and help ensure lower utility bills, he said.

That building is in such bad shape that even SCAD wouldn't touch it. Glad somebody came along willing to invest the time and reseources into saving it. That could help the Waters Avenue corridor.

A new four-story apartment building on Montgomery Street was approved Wednesday by the Historic District Board of Review at its monthly meeting.

The 14,000-square-foot building proposed for 615 Montgomery St. — known as Bowery II in reference to the Bowery apartments which are already in operation a block north – will include 51 units with partial underground parking.

The board also approved the demolition of a non-historic structure built in the 1990s, which currently occupies the property.

Those numbers don't sound correct. 51 units in a 14,000 sf structure would be about 275 sf. each. Hmmm...

It looks like the footprint is 14,000. The building is 4 stories according to the drawing they show, so that sounds a little better.
