Our granddaughter is going to participate in some sort of dance completion that I believe is being held at some convention center in the downtown area of Savannah and since we have never visited historic Savannah we thought we would spend a few days seeing the sites. We're retired and wish to stay in a nice, clean comfortable hotel that would be close to the convention center but conveniently located that we could park our car and see the sites without driving around. I understand that there is a trolley system that will take you around the historic area so finding a good location for your stay is the reason for this inquiry.

Can anyone tell me, in general, where we should focus our hotel search on? In addition are there any restaurants that we could consider visiting while we're there? Also are there particular sites or tours of the scenic area that we would not want to miss while we're there? Any information that can be provided that would make this trip a special occasion would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

P.S. If there's any visitor center I could call to get information ahead of time about Savannah I would appreciate that info as well.

Savannah GA | Official Site for Savannah Visitor Information

Without a doubt, Savannah is one of the most tourist-friendly places I've ever been.

I would recommend either of these mid-priced hotels, both for their location and great service.

Hampton Inn Savannah Hotel Historic District

There are SO many hotels to choose from that are walking distance from the civic center (which is where I believe it will be located..the convention center is a different story and is across the river but still accessible)

The closest one is the courtyard Marriott. It also happens to be across the street from the visitors center.

Pretty much everything downtown is walkable. You won't need to drive anywhere unless you want to go to the beach (but really, the panhandle has far nicer beaches)

^^^ This!

Your choice of hotel will really depend on what price you're willing to pay. Don't delay on making reservations, however, since most weekends sell out (especially if there are big events in town). If you're familiar with Trip Advisor, that's a great source of information and won't steer you wrong. Otherwise, making contact with the Visitor Center and your hotel concierge will tell you all you need to know.

There used to be a Days Inn, not your typical Days Inn, right in the historic district I always used to stay at.
Don't see it listed in trip advisor anymore, did another chain buy it?

It was so nice, exposed brick walls.
