Alderman Tony Thomas, who had his own near-accident at Drayton and Hall last week said he believes a serious accident is inevitable.

“If something is not done, there will be a fatality in that general area,” he said.

Thomas brought up his concerns at last week’s City Council workshop idea.

“I’m glad he brought it up because this is something I’ve been talking about for about six months,” said Durrence.

Last year, Durrence suggested turning Drayton, and Whitaker Streets, both one ways, into one-lane streets to slow traffic.

“One way streets that a lot of people use for access in and out of the city are real raceways,” Durrence said.

The idea never turned into anything, but following the experiment to remove parking on Bay Street, Durrence wants to know why they can’t try something similar on Drayton.

“Try it, let’s see, do a little bit of an experiment, see what would work,” he said.

Thomas, while he acknowledges a serious issue with traffic speeds on Drayton and Whitaker, said the streets are too vital for traffic flowing in and out of downtown.

“I don’t want to see traffic pushed out to the neighborhood streets,” he said.

And any decisions should wait until there’s more data available.

“I’d like to see the traffic and engineering reports, I don’t want to do anything with reducing lanes until I see that the flow of traffic can be handled,” Thomas said.

No! Leave it alone! Put speed bumps in if you really think speed is an issue, but keep it the bloody way it is! Uggggh.

Most people have no idea that you could actually turn onto the median of some of the one ways and yield and go through the red light. Turning left onto Price from Oglethorpe you can keep going as long as you yield. So many times I have to go up to someone (even Chatham county people) and tell them you can go on red.

If they're tourists (no SCAD stickers) I give them a pass. But if I see Chatham county license plate I'm honking or pulling over to tell you to GOOOOOO
