As the chairman of the Gordonston Traffic Calming Committee, and a Goebel Street resident, he said he’s familiar with the issues on the streets in his community.

“Our streets are dangerous, there’s absolutely no excuse for the speeds that people travel and cut through our neighborhood,” he said.

But he’s putting his hopes in a plan that Savannah City Council members could pass as soon as Thursday.

The Gordonston Traffic Calming Master Plan calls for 17 speed tables, 2 traffic circles, and 2 raised concrete medians on streets like Goebel Avenue, Henry Street, Atkinson, and Kinzie Avenues.

The lowest bid, from SABE, came in at $293,000.

“And relatively speaking it doesn’t cost that much, so why can’t we get it,” asked Daniels.

But the answer to that, is simple for Alderman John Hall.

“This is a non-starter for me because it’s too expensive,” said Hall, who represents the Gordonston neighborhood.

He said spending nearly $300,000 on one project for one neighborhood is simply too expensive.
