Went down to River Street tonight for the first time in 2 weeks and noticed steel and concrete finally coming out of the ground at Kessler’s huge Plant Riverside project. This is exciting stuff! These photos I took (in the dark) show just how close the new buildings are gonna be to River Street, as well to the first public parking lot (where the river walk currently ends). You can see the new river walk extension curve to the right out over the water.
I’ll keep this thread current and post other progress photos as they become available.
Here’s a new update on PR! Work is progressing at a surprising pace. The far east end hotel wing is now at 3 floors and still rising, while the foundations for the other 2 buildings are excavated and shorn up. It’s a mystery to me how holes this deep and this close to the riverbank don’t automatically fill up with water, but the constant roar of sup pumps along this stretch of River Street probably provides a clue.
Two giant cranes are currently in place, and west end access to River Street is closed to vehicular traffic now until construction is complete. Also, you can really start to visulaize the street-level dynamics (tunnel effect) of Plant Riverside combined with the Jamestown Poperties hotel rising across the street, at the corner with MLK. And all this is before the biggest (and tallest) portions of Plant Riverside even start rising out of the ground.
I really wish there were more apartments being built downtown. Mariner Grove are nice but we need more. Most apartment complexes in town are severely outdated. Went to some newer/modern ones in Pooler/PW and the difference is night and day.

There's more on the way.
Downtown has lacked apartments and condos.. hell, places to live in general for years.

There’s a ton of new apartments on the boards for downtown ...
Kessler (presumably) is buying out the leases of all the honky tonk bars (Chucks, Saddlebags, 409 West, River Bar, etc) on West River Street across from the new hotel. They have a year to vacate, when the hotel opens. Upscale retailers are being wooed to replace them.
This is not rumor. It’s really happening.
The building housing iconic gay bar Club One has also been sold. They have to be out by February.
