So the time has FINALLY come!!! It feels like it’s taken forever, but my husband and I are coming down this coming wk/wkend for a 4-5 day visit. Hoping to get some ideas of good reasonable places to eat (not chains pls) ((read something about a Mrs. Wilkes??)), things that locals feel are good things to do, and what we can do/see/visit to help us get a feel for “life around Savannah”. We’re already in contact with a realtor for when the time comes to move next year. LOOKING FORWARD TO ALL OF YOUR RESPONSES 😎😎😎

Huc a Poo’s on Tybee. Pizza, beer, nachos, where locals hang out.

On the list above, Flacos Tacos is opening a spot downtown. Congress St, I think.

If you really want to feel like a local, get outside of the downtown Historic District and just spend time driving around and exploring, particularly the east side island suburbs (Wilmington, Whitemarsh, Talahi, Isle of Hope, Skidaway), the south side suburbs (Vernonburg, Montgomery, Georgetown, Richmond Hill) and the west side suburbs (Pooler, Port Wentworth, Rincon).

A really good way to get a feel for the city of Savannah proper is to drive the length of Abercorn Street, from the river downtown all the way out to I-95 (a distance of about 18 miles). You’ll be able to see quite clearly, every few blocks, how each section of the city has developed over the past 300 years. I know of few cities where you can actually tell the progress of time just by driving down one street.

There’s great pocket neighborhoods, shopping areas and good local restaurants tucked throughout Savannah, but it’s impossible to know about them or discover them all without living here.

Newsboy, thank you very much! We will do as you suggested! I’ve researched the area a lot, and we’re staying w friends in Guyton. We’ll def be driving around and checking out those areas you mentioned as we’re trying to narrow down our search area for homes. Our plan is to buy within 6 months of moving there mid-late next yr.

Warning: Avoid Abercorn south of the Historic District during morning and evening rush hours, during the week. The traffic is brutal. Abercorn is at its most beautiful downtown, with its squares, and once again farther south after you cross Victory Drive. That is a lovely stretch of pocket parks and large 20th-century homes. After that truly gorgeous section, Abercorn becomes more a commercial strip -- though you'll see both shopping malls (Oglethorpe and Savannah) and Georgia Southern University's Armstrong Campus. I'd turn around at the campus or at the 2nd mall (Savannah). The rest of Abercorn toward I-95 is 100% skippable. It's traffic-snarled and not attractive in the least.

We are in Pooler and look forward to trying Flacos very soon. I’m not sure why we haven’t heard of it before now, when we are so close to both Pooler locations.

Re: No chains

I happen to think Bonefish grill has some of the best fish in Savannah.

We discovered Drift Away Cafe in Sandfly. Yummy! A friend told us to try Sweet Potatoes too. Out to Tybee-I second Huc-A-Poos. We camped at the campground there when we were house hunting and it was walking distance. Sundae's too out on Tybee-you must make a reservation-but the food. Oh my! It's as good as what we could get at the Culinary Institute! You won't be disappointed!
