The owner wants $4 million for infrastructure upgrades in order to facilitate $160 million worth of private development that will include a major grocery store, restaurants and more. This sounds like a win win for Statesboro imo.

Quote:
They're asking for about $4 million worth of road work that could pave the way for a huge wave of business and jobs. Tormenta FC already announced plans in January to build their own 5,000-seat stadium. They're asking the city of Statesboro for an access road off Veterans Memorial Parkway, more lanes on existing roads, and beefed up intersections.

"We can't build the stadium and hold concerts the way we want to and all the development if we can't move traffic," said Darin Van Tassel, President, Tormenta FC.

Van Tassel says the stadium is just part of a plan that includes a major grocery chain, restaurants, and more.

"This whole development, which is about $160 million when you build it out, is all private dollars.

He and Tormenta want the city to establish a TAD tax allocation district for their area to help generate tax revenue to pay for the roadwork, which he says...

According to an article published on July 14 in the Statesboro Herald, the owner of the Tormenta FC stated the development would be similar to the Battery Atlanta development surrounding Sun Trust Park. The grocery store will be 41,000 sf, which leads me to believe it could be Publix. Also two hotels and a movie theatre will be built. All in All a huge win for Statesboro and SE Georgia.

Quote:
Most of the proposed private business development would be done by this group. The exception is a parcel under contract to be developed by a regional grocery store chain, which would also include other businesses in its shopping center.

Widening of a portion of Old Register Road to three lanes and construction of a four-lane divided road from Old Register, running roughly parallel to Veterans Memorial Parkway, near the current tree line are proposed as key public investments from the TAD funding.

I'm not sure. I don't keep much track of news I'm afraid.

I'm pretty sure it probably was. Something major like this and the fact the the developers have a solid plan and financing, pretty much guarantees it was approved.

The TAD was approved for this development, but it hinges on a grocer being announced before Dec 31. Hopefully, it's a Publix....

It looks like the Tax Allocation District created for this project is still alive. The city council received a letter in December from a regional supermarket chain to come to the district. My guess is that its Publix. The announcement is suppose to be made later this month.

Quote:
This letter was required to keep the Old Register Tax Allocation District intact past Dec. 31 under the terms of an agreement involving the city, the Bulloch County Board of Commissioners and the Bulloch County Board of Education. City Attorney Cain Smith would neither confirm nor deny that Publix is the chain in question, but he said the city is satisfied with the letter.

Still no announcement on the supermarket, but a groundbreaking for stadium is planned for March....
Quote:
“It’s all moving along smoothly,” Van Tassell said Tuesday. “The piece that I can talk to you about is, the roads are out for bid, and we expect for early March for some groundbreakings to occur.”

One groundbreaking ceremony he is predicting will be for the stadium complex. In addition to the stadium seating 5,300 people for soccer games and up to 14,000 for concerts and similar events, this will include a restaurant, a craft brewery and the Tormenta FC offices and team stores.

Van Tassell said he doesn’t “get to answer for” the unnamed company that is expected to build the supermarket.

“There’s no doubt, from a ceremony standpoint we would have ours first,” he said. “Those roads have got to get further along so they can do their part.”

Van Tassell and his wife own The Clubhouse family fun center and are also among the owners of Tormenta FC, of which he is president, and the investment group for other projects in the TAD.

Groundbreaking for the stadium is set for March 27th. Also next month the grocery store should be announced.
Quote:
No firm completion date is set for the stadium, but Van Tassell says that he expects Tormenta to play its first game of 2020 in its new home.
One of the triggers for Tormenta’s rapid growth from an upstart PDL squad in 2016 to a professional side has been immense fan support and the integration of the team into the Statesboro community. Players will be more visible than ever now that they will be full-time residents of the town and the fans are invited to be as close as ever to the club’s day-to-day operations.
During Saturday’s announcement, Van Tassell said that fans were not only invited to the March 27 stadium groundbreaking, but that it will be a “B.Y.O.S.” – or, “Bring Your Own Shovel” – event.

“We want everyone to be involved,” Van Tassell said. “If you come out, bring a shovel and be a part of our growth.”
Also announced on Saturday was that a major grocery chain will be announcing its groundbreaking plans for a supermarket in the business development that will be constructed between the new stadium and the 301 bypass. In addition to the grocery chain’s arrival, building plans also state that hotels, a movie theater, a bank and additional restaurants and retail will fill the site.
