According to the study, an incorporated islands city would be the second largest in the county. I actually support the incorporation. It makes any future Savannah-Chatham more feasible as this would eliminate the biggest source of opposition to consolidation.

Quote:
If the islands create their own city, the study shows it will lower property taxes for the 23,538 people who would live in the city's limits. The new municipality would replace Pooler as the second-largest city in Chatham County.

Specifically, the study says city officials would decrease the millage rate from 4.99 to 4.130. This slight change saves taxpayers more than $800,000 per year.

Despite the decrease in taxes, the study says the municipality would have a more than $2 million budget surplus every year. According to Incorporate the Islands, this money will go directly to the islands for road repairs, a new fire station, and other related needs.

According to the study, islands residents pay nearly $11 million to other municipalities for services that do not directly benefit islands communities.

Uh .... Pooler’s population was estimated at 23,816 in 2017 and is probably over 25,000 by now so I don’t know where they’re getting this notion that the islands would be the county’s 2nd largest municipality. The islands are pretty much built out but Pooler has tons of housing developments currently under way.

Chatham's islands (if we mean all except Skidaway Is., which wants its own separate municipality) might still exceed Pooler's 23,816 people now: perhaps 32,000 already. It's doubtful that Pooler has reached 25,000 yet. It gained only 393 people from 2016 to 2017. Their huge population growth has slowed down tremendously, which is why Pooler might try to annex Georgetown. Yep, truly unthinkable just 10 years ago, quite possible in future after all the county hysteria to incorporate. And note Pooler's incursions down through Quacco Road, and Georgetown's mostly Republican voters.

Unincorporated Chatham County is totally up for grabs, just like Fulton County was. In both cases, you have so-called "chocolate cities" like Atlanta and Savannah ringed by more populous white suburbs within the same county. This wasn't the case in Athens, Columbus, and Macon -- where the black and white communities had to consider all aspects of consolidation, pro and con, head-on. In Augusta, the former City of Augusta was broke, with 43,000 poor mostly minority residents. Consolidation included an agreement about equal black-white representation at the executive government level. It passed. Atlanta/Fulton and Chatham/Savannah don't have the same things to consider: it's mostly about race.

Although they say the Chatham County Police Department is doing the best they can, they believe they need more.

"We're talking about the cost of police cars, uniformed officers, detectives, down to the belts that they wear,” incorporate The Islands, President, Adam Avant said.

Estimating a proposed budget of 4.5 million dollars for a police department. That includes equipment, cars, uniforms, and salaries.

"What we're trying to do is look at police protection because it will be part of a city in the future. so we need to look at the expenses,” Maggioni said.
