I hate to bring this up BUT, you mention retiring. That implies that you are of a certain age. And THAT means that you will be needing more and more visits to the doctor. (wish it weren't so, but it is!)

Outside of the immediate Savannah Metropolitan area, there simply is not the medical facilities that you will be needing at some time. Small hospitals, with limited access to a few specialists, yes, but not for extensive treatment. More than one couple has had to give up and move closer to Savannah. That's not a fun thing to do. An hour's travel just to see the doctor or get tests gets to be a problem for the elderly (and yeah, you are going to get there.)

Think long and hard about the islands area around Savannah. There are doctors and medical facilities there with easy access to the intown hospitals. Rose Dhu, and Coffee Bluff are two more residential areas with easy access to the water.

Of course, if you really want surf fishing, there is only one place...Tybee. All the rest are on rivers and marsh. There are public boat ramps all over the place.

Whitemarsh Island, Talahi Island and other spots in that area might have something in your price range. Thunderbolt, (between Savannah and the Islands) is another place to look. A couple more spots might be the Vernon View or Montgomery areas. There are scads of places around Savannah that might suit you just fine. I really don't think you would be real smart to get something further south like Liberty or McIntosh Counties.

Good luck!

If I were going to shop for horse land and still be within an hour or two of Savannah, I'd look northeast of here between Sylvania and Waynesboro. You'd also be close to Augusta which offers some city-style amenities for those odd nights out.

The land's prettier and somewhat more remote. There's freshwater fishing on the Ogeechee River which is about as pretty as anything down here. They don't have surf, but you could take up canoeing.

You also might need to target your search to areas near publicly owned forests which may give you access to riding trails. Maybe you should google up some local wildlife management areas and see if you can find something that way.

I'm glad we both had a laugh at each other's expense.

Sylvania is a very inexpensive place. An hour to Savannah and An hour to Augusta. Houses with Acreage are available. Medical is much cheaper in Augusta (Medical College of Georgia-University Hospital)

Thank you Padgett. It's something to keep in mind but then again I live only about 15 miles from downtown Boston with some of the best medical facilities around and unless you are in an ambulance with the siren going full blast it could still take an hour to get to one of the facilities.

I am looking for a small town where I can come buy a house and rest for 6-12 months or so. Something off the beaten path, with a small population where I can get to know the locals and rest. Cheap housing wouldn't hurt either. I am looking for a good amount of sun, and potentially no snow, rain is fine if it's sunny enough, and most definitely fireflies!! I actually like humidity. What are the weather and people like there?? Are there any tiny towns near the beach (within 10-20 minutes) with these qualifications??

Fireflies are rare to non-existent along the coast. As far as "tiny towns" near the beach, my first thought would be no, unless you consider suburban Savannah & Brunswick "tiny towns". Consider eastern Liberty & McIntosh counties, although neither provide direct beach access.

What are you, a Charleston booster? The people are just as friendly in Savannah.
