This seems like a reasonable plan. I hope the city is successful in solving this issue...

One of the biggest challenges Savannah faces is the 44% of households that cannot afford housing - about 23,000 families.

In the new proposal, the city would acquire and sell 1,000 abandoned and blighted properties over the span of 10 years

The properties would be renovated, reconstructed and re-sold as affordable homes for families and individuals.

The estimated cost of the proposal is $20 million. But as the city renovates and resells each home, up to 80% of the investment could be made back.

I doubt it. It's a politician's dream and one that doesn't make sense. It has taken years for the city to figure out how to buy blighted houses. (In fact there aren't too many left and as we get close in on new giant projects there will be less and less "blighted" houses as the owner will sell out to speculators.) The city knows less about renovation than fixing a kid's bike. The "city" won't do the work, they will sub it out to contractors
who have plenty of work now. (At much higher prices). Would a contractor like to renovated in the Historic district, Islands, the Landings or a derelict house on the far west side.

AND, the city of Savannah has in place right now programs for people to buy very nice houses with very little of their own money (As little as $1000. ) See Dream Makers program and wonder why the posted article might not make sense.

Public transportation around the area is bad. Albeit, I use the free shuttle when I'm downtown and love it. And now they offer free rides with electric cars around downtown with the Downtowner app which I think is great.

They keep building more and more hotels instead of housing in locations where apartments would be beneficial for people who actually work and live in the city. City could build taller apartment complexes since space is continuing to be limited. They don't wanna do that downtown because of the skyline that's fine, but taller apartment buildings should begin being built in other areas of Savannah. Not sure how it conflicts with zoning but with how congested Savannah is and how long commutes take this problem could be solved if action is taken from multiple angles. Most of the apartment complexes inside Savannah are outdated and borderline worn down.

It also doesn't help that Pooler wants to keep growing but their city planning for the future is not very public transit friendly either and only designed for Cars Cars Cars! All of these apartments being built in Pooler are not very walkable friendly. Some are built right next to the shopping centers, but most aren't.

I agree with most of this except, Savannah actually has alot of the apartments out there. Everything along Benton Blvd past Cheddars is Savannah, plus all the ones further down around Godley Station school. The bigger issue, is there is NO planning between the two. A good example is how Benton is four lane in Pooler but only two lanes through Savannah.
