Hubby and I are looking for recommendations to your favorite "hole in the wall" restaurants. We've found some of the best food in these little, perhaps not too well known places that might not look too big or attractive on the outside but are dynamite when it comes to the food.

Sisters of the New South is one place we like. Nothing fancy but we really like the food and the prices aren't hideous. We swing by Vinnie's often when we go downtown. Allyanna's is another place we frequent and as a bonus, they deliver to us. Loc's Chicken and Waffles and many of the other local breakfast/lunch places are also favorites of ours.

Ideally, we're looking for places in the downtown and midtown areas (we live less than a mile from Daffin Park), Wilmington Island, Tybee, Sandfly, etc. Plus, we like supporting local businesses whenever we can.

We're not looking for any particular type of cuisine, just options in general to choose from as we continue to learn the lay of the land.

Thanks much!

Clary's isn't exactly low-profile, but I simply can't start any shopping trip to Savannah with stopping in for some Hoppel Poppel!

I just went to a place across the street from McDonoughs called Fire and it was amazing. Asian fare. Their sushi was filling and very good. Very friendly Filipino servers.

Green Truck (burgers!), Walls BBQ, Sandfly BBQ (either location), Randy's BBQ (zero places to sit, but MY GAWD, it's good!), Nairobia's Grits and Gravy (breakfast), Al Salaam Deli (best gyro in town), Geneva's (fried chicken/soul food), Vinnie's (pizza), Tortuga's Island Grille (breakfast especially, but also lunch or dinner). I hear Tulum's (Mexican) pretty good, but there are several real honest-to-goodness Taquerias and Central American places around town that are great if you don't care about ambiance (Taqueria la Canasta, Pupuseria Jireh)... Lots of little gems out there....

If you don't mind a bit of a drive, The Old School Diner offers good seafood in a fun, laid-back setting.

BTW, ignore the xenophobic reviews about the place's 'sketchy' atmosphere. I would deem such people as being scared of their own shadow, as well as unappreciative of an authentic Coastal Georgia experience.

Everything CoastalGAGuy said. Sandfly is legit BBQ. Al Salaam is good but actually my favorite gyro was B Mattew's, that place is really great. I would add.... Breakfast Club and Sundae Cafe on Tybee. Amazing food and atmosphere, 5 stars both of those two places.

Vinnie's... okay I confess I have been wondering since I moved here, why is it so famous?! Mellow Mushroom, Costanzo's, Stoners' are tastier imo. I love pizza! Especially wheat crust, hard to go back after having that. Riverboat Pizza in west Chatham is great. Vinnie's, is fun people watching but the pizza itself.. meh? Ah and while we are in City Market.. If we are talking hole in the wall I don't know if Lulu's qualifies but mmmm my goodness. If you visit Savannah you gotta visit Lulu's.

Mate’ Factor on E Hall St. Coffee and pastry shop with great sandwiches too. It’s on my list to try. I hear the place is charming and the food is great. It’s almost like a secret that only the neighbors know about.
