It’s surprisingly difficult to find any information online about how Savannah’s racial makeup has changed over the last 50 years (if it has). Any good sources or information on that?

I would think the census website has everything you’re looking for.

The Census website is very user-friendly for the 2010 census. Everything earlier than that is very hard to access.

Here is a map I put together some time ago that shows how the white and black absolute population numbers have shifted from 1990 - 2010 at the Census Block Group level. I suspect this trend has continued (or even accelerated) over the past nine years as well.

I tried to find better data. I suspect that the Census' 72 year rule is making it hard to pull data from 1970 forward. However, if you are really interested in researching it, I'd recommending searching from this page at the Census' website. You'll probable have to parse through PDF reports, but they are available from what I saw by briefly looking.

Maybe not, but Google sure is. Honestly, why can an old fogey like me find this stuff (incl.: a declining percentage of African Americans), but not you? I did grow up in Savannah, but still...

Interesting, thanks. Just curious what that -303 right in the heart of the city would be all about (when all other surrounding tracts saw increasing numbers of whites)?

Thanks for the links. Going back to 1950/1960 is where I found few user-friendly links.

But it’s clear that the black increase of the last 60 years has leveled off. Still—now a majority black city, around 55%. A huge increase from 1950/1960.
Whites way down in that time frame. From big majority to possibly 35% in 2020?
And Hispanics (relatively) way up in the last 30 years.

Totally simplistic. You're missing quite a few episodes. First, you must consider white flight in the 1960s, the story in virtually every southern city of 50,000+ and which led to statistical declines of whites within city limits. In Savannah, it meant a population loss of 20% (1960-1970), most all of it whites. (They moved just outside the boundaries.) To remedy this, a large annexation of (then 99% white) southside neighborhoods passed in 1978. Comparing those same city boundaries from 1980 to present is a more accurate way to assess racial/ethnic makeup. Finally, since 2000 Savannah has been gentrifying like Charleston did. It's also a city of escalating rents radiating from downtown.

The trend: The black majority is already a bare majority, down from almost 60%. That makes Van Johnson's victory all the more impressive. He had to win a lot of white progressives and white Democrats or DeLoach, a white man, would still be the mayor.

Non-Hispanic Whites are less than one-third of Savannah. What's truly astounding is that DeLoach ever won in the first place.
