They've cut down all the trees inside the cloverleafs of the I-95/I-16 interchange and have started clearing trees along I-16 immediately east of the interchange. This is the first sign that work has finally begun on the long-awaited reconstruction of that interchange and the widening of 16 from 96 to 516. Of course this is just the beginning and a lot of pre-work still needs be done (the stretch of I-16 to be widened hasn't even been signed as a construction zone yet). But I think it's safe to say that from here on out, things are gonna get MESSY and there's gonna be a lot to watch in the next 2-3 years (or however long it takes to finish this).

If you come across any news or feel led to share personal observations / frustrations, post them here!

LET THE CONSTRUCTION BEGIN!

I was sad to see the row of nice big trees, getting on 95N from 16 yesterday, being cut down. I hope the end result is worth it.

They sure are slow to begin this... I wonder what’s the hold up?

I was told they had to "adjust" the design to keep it in budget, so things were delayed until they knew what was going to be built.

I've been off the islands just twice in the past month -- both quick trips downtown and back -- so more than a bit curious how work is progressing on this project during the shutdown and quarantine. With traffic practically non-existent most days, seems like this would be the perfect time for GDOT to accelerate work and get ahead of schedule. Can somebody who lives out that way or travels through the construction zone regularly give an update?

Really there hasn't been that much done other than tree clearing. Trees are down in the entire interchange as well as along 95 and 16 in the area of the interchange.
