Parker's is on the MPC agenda Tuesday for site plan approval to redevelop the block bounded by E. Derenne, White Bluff, and 73rd Streets. It does not include the Krystal or CVS, but those lots are also owned by the Lewis family.

Word on the street is the redevelopment of the block will also include Chick Fil-A and Starbucks.

Personally, I think this is great for the City since those eyesore buildings will be demolished. It will also unfortunately mean the removal of the Globe.

Here's the site plan.

Maybe they can roll it down Abercorn, Indiana Jones-style, and set it up in the Oglethorpe Mall parking lot.

That area certainly needs a face lift. Good news.

Ahh.
I was looking forward to someday taking my grandkids out late-night to throw rocks at the globe.

According to the City website, it’s in permitting with the state and Federal Highway Administration (since it affects Interstate 516). Looks like the Environmental Impact Study was submitted earlier this year. It’s not uncommon for these types of projects to take 10-15 years to come to fruition.

If it is a Chick Fil A planned for that location, that will cause a lot of traffic in that area. I live over by the one on Victory and that one causes a mess for that shopping center.

It looks like they are aware of that and have doubled the drive thru to hold at least 30 cars and it has two pickup lanes. The one on Victory only has a single pickup lane. Also, they aren't showing Chick Fil-A to have direct access to any of the roads, forcing the drive thru to overflow onto Parker's site.

It seems the demo of the globe is causing controversy. Personally, I understand why it needs to be removed. The structure is aging and it's probably contaminated the earth with byproducts of natural gas storage. Also, in order to fit the Parker's, Chick Fil-A, and Starbucks, there simply isn't enough room.

The folks who think it can simply be rolled down Abercorn make me laugh (not targeting you DanAvery, but there are people who legitimately think it can be moved). I don't think they understand how large it is or is constructed. My guess is it would cost a couple million to disassemble and reweld it in a new location. And on a small development like this, that's enough to make the payback period not worth it.

So, what's the cost benefit analysis look like? Bring in more taxes and revitalize a derelict area? Or, save a gas storage tank that is obsolete and nothing more than just "kind of cool."

I think if CFA is officially announced, people will get over it real quick.
