Hi! I'm considering a move to Savannah.

1) Is it possible to live there w/o a car? Is there decent public transit?

2) Good/bad/horrible neighborhoods?

3) What do YOU like and dislike about Savannah?

Any and all info would be greatly appreciated -- whatever you feel might be relevant. Thanks so much, Internet friends!

-- John

Not enough info to tell you. What’s your budget? Your age?
1. There is a transit service in Savannah, but i wouldn’t be without a car.
2. Yes
3. Dislike the humidity in the summer. Like that there is always something going on and great restaurants.( not during Covid)

We are in the historic district and don’t use our car on a daily basis, but shifting to ‘no car’ would be very limiting. If someone would put an Ace Hardware and a Trader Joe’s into the old Sears building, it would help a lot; but I would still keep the car.
Like: as mentioned, lots of things going on throughout the year, great food scene, running along the River or through the parks in the early morning, easy access to the beach without being a ‘beach town’.
No like: brutally humid in Summer; lots of ambulance chasing law firms that make car insurance expensive compared to other spots; biking is ok in town but if you are a serious road biker the area is weak compared to many others - primarily because there are fewer small country roads with good connectivity because the combination of rail lines and waterways creates choke points where you have to get on a four lane road. I still road bike here though Also flat as a pancake, which is either a plus or a minus depending on your perspective.
Neighborhoods: all types; and changing. Lots of investment happening around Starland.

Depending on lifestyle, I think life without a car is possible if you live in the historical or especially Victorian district.

What you'd save on owning a car & insurance you could Lyft the handful of times a month you might need to go somewhere else.

If you're living in the Victoria district, there is crime. But usually property crime as you have in any more urban area. But I never feel unsafe walking at night.

I love it all. Amazing restaurants, always a lot going on in Forsythe, love that it's largely walkable.

As someone who has lived in Savannah (not by choice) recently, I would not personally move back. Just my personal opinion due to types of work (heavy on hospitality, trucking, etc. and definitely not as high paying as some other areas) or lack thereof available there, very high humidity and really not a ton going on compared to some other areas in the country. Again, just my opinion and not poo pooing the area if you are set on it for a specific reason.

Downtown area is quite popular among drinkers (open containers allowed) and although it never bothered me, you do get your drinking/bachellorette crowds quite a bit. Restaurant scene imo is not as great as I initially expected, prior to the move there several years ago. Not a ton of variety. Auto insurance is surprisingly higher as mentioned before, with over double what I paid in VA and comparable to NYC.

I would agree that being without a car would be a bit challenging, to say the least.

Just my 2 cents. Everyone is different so take the above with a grain of salt as those have been my personal experiences.
