I’m just an outside observer, but I’m in favor of preserving history and old neighborhoods. Sure, Yamacraw Village is on prime Savannah real estate, but I’d rather see it improved and preserved than torn down.

It will probably be redone similar to what was done with Savannah Gardens, mixed use, apartments, single family and townhomes. It will probably be laid out with a couple of squares and a linear park along the canal connecting it to the new arena area. Hopefully they will add some additional land and remove some of the buildings along Fahm to Oglethorpe and increase the housing footprint.

I know Savannah hates to be compared to Charleston, but they share the same sort of historic architecture. I’ve taken a tour there, and watched a This Old House series in Charleston lately, and I was struck by how stringent they are in preserving their historic buildings. The most broken down, abandoned building cannot be torn down, they must be restored. If you restore a crooked house there, it needs to stay crooked.

The result is that folks live in some very expensive, old, crooked houses.

It would do the city a favor I. My opinion.
