I will be passing through Savannah this Sunday for about half a day (morning to the afternoon). I've always wanted to visit and this will be my first time. I will only be there for half a day but are there any must sees or dos... I know this is a very short time span to truely gain an appreciation of a city but any and all ideas are welcome. Particurally any church recommendation for Sunday morning (Baptist if possible). Thanks in advance!

For a half day, I personally would recommend a trolley tour to make sure you see all of the historic district and it's "touristy" parts. From that trip you can gauge anything else that you'd like to take a closer look at and get any lunch recommendations from what you see or what your tour guide tells you.

For a church, I will recommend my own. Although it isn't Baptist, you would certainly feel welcome there (I grew up Baptist and love it). It's Savannah Christian Church and is not far off of the interstate. Take I-95 to exit 94. Turn toward Savannah (per signs) and at the first light take a left. Follow that road about 2-3 miles and you'll see the church just past the lake on the right. You can wear whatever you feel comfortable wearing to church. There is a 9:15 service and an 11:00 service. I would suggest the 9:15 so that you can leave there and head downtown to do the tourist thing.

Those are my two cents.

I recommend Southside Baptist on Skidaway road.. It's the Baptist church I attend.

Great church, great pastor and great people.

There's two church services, so if you want to go to the early service.. Starts at 8:15am. You'll be out early, by 9:30am with plenty of time to explore Savannah. There's sunday school as well..

The late service starts at 10:45AM

Since your time is limited, and there are so many historic beautiful churches in the downtown area, trying to go to one that is outside of the district would be hard to fit in. However, I understand wanting to go to a church that may fit in better with your way of worship.

In addition to First Baptist, there is also Christ Church and St. Johns, (Anglican and Episcopal) Wesley Monumental and Trinity Methodist, (Methodist) Lutheran Church of the Ascension, Independent Presbyterian,
The Cathedral of St. John the Baptist (well worth seeing even if you don't worship there). There are others, but if I tried to name them, I would be bound to leave out those that are near the center. All of these churches have a long history in Savannah. And all of them are lovely to see. They are also within a couple of blocks of the Center of the City. If you were to drive down Bull Street, you would get to see most of them. I think that most of them also have websites that you could find with a google search.

Many people that have just a few hours to spend, will simply drive up and down the main streets, Bull, Abercorn, Habersham, Barnard, and see the parks and squares. When they see something that really catches the eye, then they park, and get a closer look.

Here is a site for a good map of just the Historic District for guidance.

Savannah Getaways, Savannah Georgia Bed and Breakfast, Savannah Georgia Bed and Breakfasts

And Yes! The streets are that straight. You can't get lost. If you know the name of something you would like to visit, do a name search and get the address. You may be surprised at how easy it will be to find it.

Default All this church talk...

I am not involved in any man-made organized religion.
I always thought...
I am my own religion.
But since I live right next door to a Church of Christ, maybe tomorrow morning might be a good day to...

Ya neva can tell.

Thank you everyone... Unfortunately I ended having to stay in Hinnesville longer than I thought and was only able to pass through Savannah very briefly on my way to Columbia, SC. The only place I stopped was at the mall (I had to pick up a gift). Maybe its for the better anyway because I would love to be able to spend at least a full day there. Thanks again to everyone for the recommendations, I will use them the next time I am able to come down.
