I know this may be an odd question, but I am hoping some of you natives can help me out. I will be moving down there in a couple of weeks, and both my fiance and I have accounts with very well known national banks, unfortunately there are no locations near Savannah. Therefore, I am considering transferring banks, but since the banks in the south are not that popular up north I am not familar with which would be the best. I am just talking about a basic checking account. I have some reearch on SunTrust and Wachovia, but I am just wondering if anyone has suggestions or advice. Thanks again!!!

For just a simple checking account. I would go for the bank that was the most convenient one to where I lived or worked. For CDs, loans, etc.....then the interest rate would be the most important.

Do you have any idea where you will be located? Perhaps someone would be able to direct you to the bank with the best drive-in window, friendly tellers, and location.

I've had accounts at both Suntrust and the Savannah Bank. Suntrust is convenient if you're traveling around the southeast because there are plenty of locations. The customer service is usually excellent.

The Savannah Bank is locally based and is somewhat more restrictive about who they let open an account. You need good credit, in other words. Their customer service is also excellent. Seems many well-connected locals use this bank, if things haven't changed.

I use B of A.
Yup, a great big national outfit.
But the branch on Wilmington has a hometown kinda feel to me.
I'm friends with everybody that works there.

I would not recommend Coastal Bank...See if you can find a credit union. Much...Much...better.

I'll never deal with the "too big to Fail" banks any more
The Savannah Bank is tops
How I miss First Union: the bank where it's initials were it's customer service policy!

Wachovia and Wells Fargo have merged. Not sure if it is good or bad. As of now, you are only able to access your account with the bank you opened up at, but I have been told in the next few years, you will have this option.
