There have been so many questions about the scruffier sections of the Historic District that I've created a new self-guided tour for all of you. It's called the Tour of Blighted Homes.

Print out the attached link from the paper and take a little drive around the lesser known sections of the district. Blighted Houses Searchable Database | SavannahNow.com (http://savannahnow.com/node/411567?appSession=446176913735282&RecordID=&PageID =2&PrevPageID=1&cpipage=1&CPISortType=&CPIorderBy = - broken link)

You'll see places that are rather interesting and definitely not touristy.

I was sort of surprised but figured no one was really interested. Most of those addresses are safe to check out. Really, it's all safe enough.

The fascinating and worrisome thing is that there are so many beautiful buildings slated to be demolished.

Edit: If the link doesn't go directly to the historic district, click "select all" and check "historic". You'll get the list I referred to.

Ellie, it's not lack of interest.....it's more like a sense of wonderment and awe. Some of these (in fact, most of them) have been around for decades. How in the world have they been allowed to get in this shape!!

I understand that they are considered Private Property, and the county or city can't touch it, but it just seems that something should have been done much sooner.

Maybe it we posted a big sign, at least 3'X5' foot on the property giving the name of the owner and how to contact him/her/it, it might do a little good.

Maybe with an increase in the amount of property tax? I can't imagine the owners paying taxes on some of those places, but maybe they would sell, hopefully at rock bottom prices to someone (like the county or city) that would tear them down.
