Hi. I'm taking my mom on a vacation to your fine city in early October.
Neither of us have ever been to the area. I plan on being there about a week.
She is in good health but needs to limit walking to shorter distances.
Any suggestions on things to see, to do, where to eat, and mostly where to stay? I would like someplace nice, safe, and maybe within walking distance to the historic areas. We'll lhave a car, but would rather not use it if it's not needed.

Thanks, for the help, tips, and advice in advance.

There are many nice hotels, B&B's, and weekend condo rentals available in the historic district. I would suggest finding something on or north of Liberty St. That way you and your mom can walk to almost everything. Try to stick to the center of the district so you can avoid crossing MLK or having to walk across the wasteland near the civic center.

I like the locations of the Mulberry Inn, the Hampton Inn on Bay, the Holiday Inn Express on Bay St., the the Old Harbor Inn, the River St. Inn, the Hilton Desoto, the Marshall House, the Hotel at Ellis Sq., Avia, and the new Bohemian. There are probably others I'm forgetting, but that's plenty to choose from.

You will probably want to take some trolley tours to get an overview of the city and some historical background. The Riverfront is a nice place to sit and watch the container ships go by. There are many restaurants there to sit and have a drink or something to eat.
If she's a fan of Paula Deen, your mother might like to go her restaurant. I believe there are lunch cruises on the river, too.

I always recommend checking out Trip Advisor. That site has great tips on the area. Also, there is a forum there as well that includes locals and tourists alike that will give you great travel tips. I've left many comments there and try to critique any new restaurant, hotel, tour, museum, "thing-to-do" that there is. You'll find a lot of great travel tips! Of course you can ask here, but I always recommend multiple resources!

I have to agree, the Old Town Trolley tour is a lot of fun, and it allows you to get on and off wherever you want, and pick up again. You can actually stop, eat or tour an area and in a few minutes or hour later get back on! There is a lot to see and do here! Bring a camera and multiple batteries!
