How far is the beach from Downtown Savannah? Do buses or streetcars go that far?

20-25 minutes by car. Unless there is an accident on US-80 in which case you can be stuck on Tybee for hours or if your on the other side, never get to the beach that day.

No buses or streetcars. Sometimes tour buses will have a tour going that way, but that's not something you can depend on.

you wouldn't want to go to tybee. It is kind of a nasty beach. Lived there for eight years and found that Hilton Head is not much different on driving distance but has a much better beach as well as many more diversions and restaurants to choose from

Hmm... let's see. Driving distance from Downtown Savannah to Hilton Head Island's beach; 45 minutes to an hour versus driving distance from Downtown Savannah to Tybee Island's beach; 25 minutes. No, that's not too much difference

Side note: While I'll agree that Hilton Head has MUCH better development than run down, beach bummed out Tybee, the quality of the water and sand doesn't really make much of a difference. It all pales in comparison to Florida's beaches or even the Outer Banks. Bottom line; DON'T come to Savannah for it's beaches, come for it's history and beauty.

Excuse me but there IS such a thing called CAT. (Chatham Area Transit) which have buses. Actually, they now have hybrid buses around town. Unfortunately there is not one going out to Tybee. The closest you'd get to Tybee by CAT bus is Wilmington Island. You'd still have to walk an hour from there to Tybee. Not worth it. Better to drive.

Im aware of that...I just found it funny that the OP seemed to assume there would be such an extensive bus system that it would go all the way out to Tybee, especially since our neck of the woods (South) isnt known for having alot of public transportation.

Streetcars REALLY made me LOL.

Then again, Im the kind of person that laughs when tourists get on the little trolley-buses in Charleston, think its supposed to be free, then get mad 'cause the driver wont let them on without paying.

They do have free shuttles around Downtown Savannah as opposed to Charleston. They're called Connect on the dot. They are funded by a transportation tax in hotels.
Also, there is or is supposed to be a trolley car that goes up and down River Street.

I'm a believer that public transportation/mass transit is possible in the south and isn't just for poor people. It tends to always get that bad rep.
