but I am afraid you will not find what you seek in Savannah, GA--based on the above criteria, as well as what you have requested in other posts.

To be close to the water you would need to live on one of 'The Islands'--Wilmington, Talahi, Whitemarsh or Tybee and I suppose Thunderbolt is also included---real estate will be more expensive in these areas.

The Isle of Hope and Skidaway are also 'near water'--even more expensive, IIRC.

--Activities for children--if you can afford private lessons, etc--then you will have a broad spectrum from which to choose.

--Convenient location--this will be contingent upon your daily activities--jobs and school, etc ie--if you live on Tybee Island/East and work in Pooler/West or beyond you will spend some time on the road.

--The friendliness of neighbors will vary--pretty much the same everywhere

--Crime--there are areas where there is significant crime--best to take precautions--stay away from these areas whenever possible.

I really think the Atlanta metro area would offer more of what you prefer--not located near water but more good schools, more jobs, better selection of housing options and a more progressive attitude in general.

From what I have heard, Wilmington Island has what you are looking for.

What kind of activities?
There are YMCA, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, Aquatic Center, Many arts programs, and clubs such as the 41st Street Boyz, Gwinnett Street Posse, the Waters Avenue Crew, and the Hitch Village Posse are sure to keep the little darlings busy and out of your hair

Okay, as everyone who is a regular on this forum knows, I LOVE Savannah. It is eclectic, artsy, and fun. BUT, I don't think it would accurately be described as progressive. In fact, if I had 20 words to describe Savannah I could come up with great adjectives, but "progressive" would not be one of them. Savannah is sort of "stuck in its ways" and that the way the city likes it. Tortoise, anyone?

Basically, I would go back and run a search of this forum. You'll find tons of people who love the city, and others who do not. That should give you a starting point.

In my experience, people who move to Savannah are usually one of two types (particularly if moving from the Northeast):

1. Those that love the city for its combination of quirkiness and old fashioned Southern manners and charm, and appreciate the arts community, architecture, and those amazing oak trees; or,

2. Those who hate the city for its combination of old-fashioned Southern eccentricity and attitudes, slower pace, and lack of NYC-level amenities.

Some mention racism, but honestly, I've lived in 8 states and traveled in Europe and Asia. I don't see any more racism in Savannah than you would expect to find in any other type of urban environment. (Excluding San Fran and Seattle perhaps; they seem pretty progressive to me.)

If I were moving to Savh from NYC I would definitely live downtown or in Ardsley Park. Actually, that is where I would live regardless. Some like the islands and they are great. I just like the "city" part of the city.

Feel free to PM me with specific questions. Good luck. Will by in NYC for a visit soon so I'll wave from my cab.

Just read over your OP again and noted the "children" part. The islands might be a better fit (water) but Ardsley Park will also be quite nice. Recommend private schools...Savh Country Day or the Catholic private schools: High Schools--St. Vincents (girls) or Benedictine (guys military). I don't know if people with kids are now living downtown, but coming from NYC, not having a large yard may not be a priority for you.
