Please, just tell me where to move!!! We are moving to the Savannah area this fall and really have no clue where to go. We aren't worried about what city or county and we don't mind a commute.

Our daughter will be entering high school this fall and I don't want her to get lost in a huge school. She also is very smart but lazy about homework so I also don't want her to get lost or overlooked by teachers. She is in band, marching jazz band, co-ed soccer and girls volleyball. So a good girls sports program and band program would be great. Also she loves art! She wants to be a marine biologist when she grows up.

Can someone tell me where I can find a school where she won't have to compete for attention with 2,000+ students, a good caring group of teachers and a good arts department?

I am tired of renting and moving (pretty much every year or so) and we're going to put down some roots. I am overwhelmed and need some good suggestions.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! I'm frazzled!

I also don't have an extra 10-12K per year to pay for private school...how about public schools?

The Savannah Arts Academy is public and considered excellent. She'll have to audition. That's all I know.

"She wants to be a marine biologist when she grows up."

A new high school is opening up in the fall on Whitmarsh Island and it will have a Biological/Environmental Science specialty program. You can read about it on the web site for the Savannah Schools:

Savannah-Chatham County, Georgia Public Schools

Savannah Arts auditions where just completed for the upcoming school year. She will have to wait until next year to apply. If she is serious about getting into the best public high school in the area then she will need to apply herself this year. Requirements 3.0 average, she will need to audition for band, so a private teacher is recommended "we did this for our daughter and chorus" and be willing to audition and want to attend the school.

The new high school on Whitmarsh Island sounds perfect but I can't find any information on it yet. I'll e-mail our realtor and try to find more info. Yeah!

There is probably not much special information on it yet. It will be in the old Coastal Middle School building. Good location. The parents on the islands have always been good about support for their schools. The High School should be no different.

One thing could be a problem for you. If you live in a different school district (that is, outside the Islands) you will have to apply for a transfer. Those students on the Islands will have first choice. You wouldn't be making a mistake for deciding to live on either Whitemarsh, Talahi, or Wilmington Island.

I don't know if you have ever been in Savannah or not, but the Islands aren't what you may expect. If you didn't look out your car window as you go over the bridges, you wouldn't even know you were on an Island. Wonderful places!!

It sounds perfect! I've got a call in to the Principal of the new school and should be talking to her this afternoon the application deadline was April 14th, so I'll have to live in the school district in order for her to be able to go this fall.

Would you suggest looking for a home or a condo? Any realtor or website suggestions? It's impossible to tell whether a house is in the school district or not.

Thank you Gracienfamily and Padgett2 for the suggestions! Y'all are awesome! Can't wait till our working/job hunt vacation in May to look at the islands!

Click on the link to the Savannah Chatham Public Schools web site. Under the Family tab, click on "Specialty Programs". On the menu on the left side, there is a "Program Criteria" link in a blue background.

Click on the Program Criteria link, then on Biological and Environmental Sciences. There is info on this page, and links to a newsletter and a brochure. The brochure is nice, and includes a program of study at each grade level.

It took me a few minutes to find it but I knew I had seen it somewhere! It is not available yet, but there is a 'school bus stop locator' that you can use to make sure you are in that high school's district.
