I've never seen a bird other than a hummer at a hummingbird feeder, and I'm new to the area. There is a pair of birds the size and shape of parakeets, they are drab gray/green and the male has a blush of red on his head and chest, so can anyone tell me what they are?

They might be the Rufous humingbird. Larger than the usual ruby throated. Not too common around here, but I'm just guessing.

Sometimes we have purple finches trying to get to the hummingbird water.

They are probably house finches. They come to my hummingbird feeder, too. They're pests.

I'll try to get pictures if I can. I am familiar with finches, but these birds do not have any brown on them nor stripes like finches have. They are a smooth, uniform graygreen with nothing else except the red on the male.

Today, I did have a pair of finches at the feeder, but the other birds are different.
