The Earth's Magnetic Field is most likely a result of the Dynamo Theory where our Liquid Iron Core is rotating and generating a Magnetic Dipole.
This in turn protects us from the Solar Wind and Solar Storms by deflecting the majority of highly energizied particles away from the planet and it's atmosphere.
Without this force shield our atmosphere would most likely be stripped away and our planet's surface would be bombarded by radiation; rendering life unlikely to develop and evolve.
Apparently this is one of the major reasons(no real magnetic field) that Mars has lost it's atmosphere and consequently it's chance of nurturing more complex lifeforms and/or any life at all.
Magnetic Field Reversals have occured throughout Earth's existence and we are overdue for another. There is a possibility that as this occurs we will have NO magnetic shield and radiation will adversely affect all life until the field flips and is reestablished.
IIRC, the flip is almost instantaneous on a geologic scale. Tracking of the magnetic pole and rotational pole have been done for a surprisingly long time. I was astounded, while reading some old Pop Mechanics, to find that the wandering of the rotational pole was fully documented back in the 1920s.
On a Geological scale....I concur; however even a few years without the Magnetic Field could wreak havoc for life on Earth....beginning with increasing cancer rates and depending how long we went unprotected...far worse consequences. For example a severe solar storm without our shield could devastate all electronic equipment planet wide. I also wonder if any correlations have been researched between approximate flip dates and species extinction events? Have you seen any research on this "theory"????
I too am surprised how complete the data is for flips and approximate dates(but it is easy to "read" in the Geologic Record) yet still concerned that we essentially have no good theory as to why the flip occurs or how it occurs...is it relative a sudden on/off flip OR a slow and gradual failing of the magnetic field with a subsequent flip and slow reintensification of the Magnetic Field.
I post the videos to give an idea of how bad it could theoritically get with a severe solar storm; now imagine what would transpire without our protective magnetic field in place.

You do realize that the warping of spacetime is theoritically possible and not a far fetched idea.....it is rooted in real science according to Einstein!
