movable type / printing press (Guttenburg I believe)

prior to this knowledge was handed down by word of mouth.
Books were hand written and very few and far between...unavailable to all but a very select few people of importance.

A knowledge explosion quickly followed. EVERYTHING we take for granted followed that.

Weapons for hunting. Without them I doubt we would have survived long enough to become what we are.

Then agriculture. It allowed man to stay in one place and create societies that were (more or less) stable.

The wheel, tools, and printing press are typically the answers "experts" give, from what I hear. And I'd have to say they should make the short list. The lever and pulley are also up there. Missiles (you could include arrows in there), dynamite (and its successors), various medical discoveries (germs, vaccines etc) are also huge. More recently, the radio, car, TV, and computers for sure. All had huge huge impacts.
