48/2*(9+3)

1st---parentheses

2nd--multiply

3rd--divide

4th--add

5th--subtract

so, do each step, one step at a time!

1. parentheses solve inside the parentheses

(9+3) = 12

2.multiply
2 x 12 = 24

now we have 48/24=2

THE ANSWER IS 2
Not saying whether it is 2 or 288... but you should study the order of operations. Then you should go back to arithmetic basics. Once revisited, you will see the flaw in your explanation.

See my previous post. You are agreeing with an explanation which defies the basics of math.

I'm not disputing the answer at this time.

Did you even read his/her explanation?? They said multiplication comes before division. But didn't explain why. According to order of operations it does not. According to definition of division it CANNOT solely based on order of operations. So without explaining why he/she multiplied before dividing, his/her proof is flawed.

The answer is 288, and this is why -

The order of precedence is:
  • The terms inside parentheses or brackets; then
  • Exponents or roots; then
  • Multiplication and division, from left to right; finally
  • Addition and subtraction, from left to right.
Which means:
48÷2(9+3) = 48÷2x12 = 24x12 = 288

However, the equation would have been clearer had it been written as (48÷2)(9+3) = 288

In order to be 2, the equation would need to be:
48÷[2(9+3)] = 48÷(2x12) = 48÷24 = 2

LOL.. Math skill vs paycheck. Let's say I am a 16 year old kid working a part time job.

Boss asks me to work part time during scheduled vacation time, says he will pay me an extra 3 dollars an hour, in addition to my 9 dollars an hour. He has scheduled me to 4 (6) hour days over the next 2 weeks so the chart shows me working 48 hours. I get paid weekly.

48 hours / 2 weeks*(9$ plus 3$)
24 * 12$ = 288 a week.

That's a whole lot better than 2$

Thank you for a simple explanation to a simple high school equation. I hope the petroleum engineers among us are beginning to understand why their clients keep coming up with dry holes ...

And the technique used by most on here is an incorrect one. The answer is 288.
