Claim to? Sheesh, what is with people always having to insinuate something? But I'm not the only one with problems with CFLs, Wired Magazine has a long article in it's latest issue about LEDs and their growing popularity, mainly because people just don't like CFLs...here, from Wired.
But problems of dimming, flicker, and light color remained. And manufacturer claims of bulb lifetime and quality were wildly exaggerated. Consumers didn’t understand that CFLs burn out rapidly when they’re not allowed to rest at least 15 minutes between being cycled off and on, or that they’d overheat and fail if they were used in recessed ceiling canisters; they weren’t told that there was no standard definition of what a 60-, 75-, or 100-watt incandescent replacement actually was.
I must be really lucky with well over a dozen CFLs in the house that have lasted for years? So much so that those that did go out, have been replaced for at least couple of years now and still going?

You don't get the harsh white glare if you choose the bulb with the right color temperature. As for the heater excuse, perhaps people don't care about summers? I use heaters and coolers for what they are, and bulbs for what they are. At least the CFLs are keeping the electricity usage and bill down this summer.

That would be my guess, I find just as many people have bad luck with them as good luck, so don't assume your results are typical.

I am not assuming with experiences from four homes (I've only quoted one of mine). I would take claims (likely political) only with a grain of salt and certainly not as being more credible than my personal experiences.

Four homes? Wow, that's a huge sampling, must have taken you years to amass that data
I can't take the light CFL's or any fluorescent light makes. I've seen some CFL's last a long time, and some burn out fairly quickly. About the same as with any lightbulb, some are defective.
I think, if the problems can be overcome, LED's are the future of electric lighting not CFL's.
I'll stick with my kerosene and gas lamps, better light.

Years of data, yes, but not because of four homes. Never mind the reality that fluorescent lamps are EVERYWHERE, including office buildings. Why? I guess you're into counting posts in forums and reading blogs over personal experiences?

You wouldn't know sarcasm if it hit you over the head....
