So if I hand it a randomly mixed cube will it do the same, or does the mixer in the video do a preset scramble? I'll withhold praise until I know more.

You can give it randomly mixed cube, it'll solve it. At the beginning of the video it looks at all the sides to map out where the colors are and how to fix it.
