Why did the "aging gene" have survival value, and hence evolve, in every species from C. elegans to H. sapiens? Presumably, species whose aging gene did not evolve, or was defeated, failed to survive as a species, leading to their extinction.
Not surprised at all to hear her state that insulin has a profound effect on DAF-2 as we know that currently the most powerful effect on (anti)aging is calorie restriction hence constant low insulin levels. Anyway just my opinion here however i believe that's why atkins or low carb diets ''may'' also be somewhat anti aging as it has the similar effect.

That isn't true and I'm frustrated because I can't find the reference, but there is a beastie that never dies here on earth. It "resets" itself to a younger state when it gets old. I read this within the last week and I thought it was either here or on a page linked to from here.

Likely because older breeders had more defective structures in their genes - especially during the major extinction events. I have come around more and more to the idea that the major extinction events revolved around either some type of strong radiation or chemical destructors. Animals that bred fast lived, those that took a long time before sexual maturity or a long time in gestation died - except - sometimes the deep ocean dwelling animals.
When I saw this thread title, I thought it was going to be about Mariano River living to be 100, which is the only way the title would make grammatical sense.
