His opinion was that it was genetic, and you either have it or not. But if there's such a dramatic increase, I'm guessing he wasn't entirely correct.

Get enough natural vitamin D and cancer, or take a supplement and get myopia.

Actually I recently asked my opthalmologist, who is a reputed one, wheteher sitting in front of a computer for many hours every day was bad for my myopia, and surprisingly to me, he also said myopia is genetic and habits have nothing to do with it. However myopia seems to be on the rise all around the develope dworld, coincidentally as we spend more and more time in fromt of electronic screens, so it looks as if there should be a link.

Massive air pollution, lead tainted toys and who knows what all, polluted water supply, making 10 year old girls work in dark dingy sweat shops making clothes for cheap a$$ American consumers.....hang some of these possible causes on a dart board and start throwing. lol

I've heard this for years and sort of makes sense, because when looking at objects close-up, the eyeball tends to elongate to sharpen the focus. Continue doing that into adulthood and the eyeball can end up staying that way.

FYI: pretty much every friend and relative I have that read a lot as a kid uses glasses now.
