A good article, i thought i'd link it incase others were interested.

BBC News - Turbulence ahead: Flight heads into storm's heart

"Scientists have flown into the heart of a turbulent weather system in a bid to uncover the causes of heavy rainfall.
A research flight off Southwest England gathered vital details about temperatures and water movements inside a band of cloud.
Coming amid weeks of wet conditions, the mission should help improve the forecasting of storms and flooding."

I'm confused.... I thought they were flying into thunderstorms and gathering data for at least a decade already (here in America)...

NOAA hurricane planes also fly into winter storms every year. But these guys seem to be more interested in the causes of heavy rain rather than mapping the structure of the storms to get data for a weather model.
