The results suggested the polypill reduced blood pressure by 12% and LDL cholesterol by 39%.

Dr David Wald, consultant cardiologist, said: "The health implications of our results are large.

"If people took the polypill from age 50, an estimated 28% would benefit by avoiding or delaying a heart attack or stroke during their lifetime."

The doctors calculated that if half of the over-50s in the UK took the daily pill, it would prevent 94,000 heart attacks and strokes each year.

Dr Wald said the trial represented a "milestone" and called for regulatory bodies to approve the polypill "urgently".

No offense towards you Brian however i'll stick with pumping iron and diet instead of taking the Polypill (statin and blood pressure medication combo).

How is this different from taking each drug individually?

What's the effect of these drugs on someone who doesn't need them but gets them anyway because they're included in the "polypill"?

I assume that they are only talking about giving Blood Pressure and Cholesterol drugs to patients who are diagnosed as 'needing' them.

When i first saw this thread title i was surmising that it was a sort of super nutritous nutraceutical as brian is usually posts some threads about that but this seems like a fancy name pill for our pals the pharmaceutical companies to push on unsuspecting people.

Yes, but one size does not fit all - even all who are 'needing' them. My DH and I are both on medication for blood pressure. But our needs are different, and we have very different medication.

Good points to everybody. I had posted a note earlier, but I noticed it didn't take. What I said was that, due to the current American diet -- hotdogs, hamburgers, and the like -- those are the ones that will live longer if given to people that need them. I'd agree that dosages should be parceled accordingly. I'm in pretty good shape and I've changed my diet so I don't worry much about it.
